Why we can’t think our way through stressful problems:

Einstein said “you can’t solve a problem with the same mind that created it”

Read that again and let it sink in.

On one hand, he is saying…

you can’t THINK your way through  stressful problems.

Why is that?

Well, from a neuro-psychology perspective,

when the brain perceives a threat (aka a stressful problem),

your BODY often has 1 of 3 responses,

fight,

flight,

or freeze. 

And when you perceive a stressful problem, 

it’s possible that your body prepares itself in one of these 3 options.

your brain and rational thinking gets hijacked

and you are in REACTION.

You’ve likely experienced this in some form or another.

you know when you are stressed out,

your mind goes into this “worry loop”

all your fears come up,

the worst case scenario feels like it’s already happened,

even though it hasn’t.

and it feels like this crazy mental loop is just on repeat.

You know what I’m talking about? 

this is your mind.

run by your amygdala,

so in order to get OUT of the mental loop,

out of the “crazies”,

an efficient and effective way,

is to get into presence,

get into your body,

even if it’s uncomfortable!

and this will automatically get you 

“out of your head”

and this opens up space to see, hear, feel a different way to RESPOND,

versus react.

try it,

next time you have a problem

and you are stressed,

notice how, trying to think about it,

takes a long time,

and lots of energy,

and results in more stress,

and often doesn’t even solve the problem.

Then try another strategy.

Pause. Stop.

Take a breath.

And feel what is going on in your body.

Feel all the sensations until they go away,

and then notice what happens.

you may find the solution 😉
