Have you found that there is a particular area of life you have a hard time making any change in?
Maybe it is weight loss,
Or your relationship with your child, or even spouse,
Or maybe you hit a ceiling financially and can’t quite seem to make the money you truly want to make and know is possible.
When this pops up in my own life,
There is one key area I reflect on…
SAFETY.
And I’m not talking about the stereotypical physical safety from,
Being chased by a bear,
Walking down the streets late at night in a dodgy neighbourhood,
Or being avoiding being hit by a Tuk Tuk in the streets of Bangkok,
I’m talking about psychological safety.
Feeling safe in your mind, and your body.
And THIS, directly relates to your nervous system.
Your automatic responses to life.
All of your programming and patterning from childhood, up until now.
You see, when the mind or body doesn’t feel SAFE,
It goes into protective defense mode,
It takes blood, energy, resources from the reproductive organs, immune system and sends this blood, energy and resources to selected muscles to prepare you for flight.
Essentially to help get you out of any pickle you are in.
I have noticed in myself and clients, that the mind operates similarly when working towards a goal.
For example…
Let’s say you want to lose weight,
And you begin to get some progress, some weight is lost,
then you go back to your original set point,
And you repeat the same process over and over again.
You never actually lose the weight and keep it off.
What if subconsciously you didn’t feel safe to do so?
What if subconsciously you didn’t want the attention that came with that?
What if there was a REASON your body wanted to keep the weight on?
What if there was actually a BENEFIT to keeping the weight?
What if the weight was actually a protective mechanism?
A protective mechanism you decided you needed when at one point in your life maybe you were feeling threatened and not safe.
Even though the actual trigger or threat was no longer in your present day experience.
When working with clients who want to lose weight, this is not necessarily the only thing that is preventing them from reaching their ideal weight goals,
HOWEVER…
It is often one of the key most overlooked components to maintaining ideal body weight.
This goes the same for intimacy in relationships,
Financial wealth,
Career acceleration,
And basically anything else.
So if you are reading this and reflecting that there is an area of life that just feels stuck,
Where you don’t ever seem to get what you want,
Ask yourself the question…
“What do I fear will happen if I achieve this?”
Make sure you are present and allowing your intuition to provide you with the response,
It may even be helpful to do streamline consciousness journaling,
Once you have the answers,
It’s time to dive into the inner work.
